Guatemala Reflections – Day 2

Rest.
Normally, when I travel, I like to jam pack my schedule and make the most out of my time.  When I think about going on missions, I must admit, there’s that same expectation underneath but probably even more so.  It’s probably fitting then that our first full day here for John and I was a total rest day.  For Barb and Gerry, Sunday is usually fairly casual and people come and go, but it happened that no one showed up today.  Even one individual who had planned to come had to cancel.  So, it was totally a time to relax, hear more of their story, and actually play board games.  I know, it’s tough work, but somebody has to do it.  Yet, in attending their church service, going to the market, and even hearing and learning more about Guatemala, it provides us an opportunity to simply be present without doing anything.  It was a reminder of how often we want to jump in and do things, be efficient, yet, we might just end up making a big mess of things.  If anything, it reminds me of when I would participate in a silent retreat and the point isn’t necessarily to get something out of it, but to be present and meet with God.  I know that the rest of the week will be busy as we have a fairly packed schedule, so what a blessing it is for us to simply begin with rest.  For me, it’s a valuable reminder that God is already on missions, we just have to be present and see what He is already doing.
