An Intern’s Book Report

“I am not but I know I am,” by Louie Giglio, is a book that serves as a great reminder that we are all just small parts in God’s infinite story. Giglio expresses in first chapter of the book that it’s not about me or I. Throughout the reading of this book, I was challenged with the thoughts that God created the cosmos and all that is in it is for His glory. The author presents the book in multiple lessons in youth ministry or other aspects of the church by connecting biblical truths with his own personal stories. That being said, his lesson on Sabbath is the one that spoke out the strongest. From what I knew of Sabbath before reading the book was that Sabbath was a day to not work and a sacred day of rest to give acknowledgement to God. This chapter was intriguing because it is not a specific day, like Sunday, but it’s a state of mind and an attitude of peace. That we are commanded to enter into Sabbath to refresh our minds for God.

The main message that spoke to me personally in the book was on trust. The reason why the topic of trust spoke to me was how much I see myself and even among Christ’s followers, don’t trust His purposes, His dependability, or His understanding of their needs at times. When I finished this chapter, it reminded me of the disciple “doubting” Thomas. Many of us, like Thomas, want that tangible experience with God. At East Toronto, I’ve see that many of us aren’t willing to take up the role of leadership. One of the core reasons I suspect is that we don’t trust ourselves or God that we are qualified. Recently I’ve been given the opportunity to join a small group which has been prompting everyone in the group to lead a bible study. I’ve personally never led a bible study and I believe that these may be one of the few things that I plan to let myself trust in the Lord.
