As a way to recap the past few months, we were asked to come up with a word or phrase to share with a group. For me, it was the word: Discovery. It’s been a journey of discovering the imago dei, the image of God, in those around me, whether it’s the people I work with, the people I see on the street, anyone. It’s this sense that they have something to show me who God is. They aren’t just a problem to be solved, but a wonder to discover.
Every time I leave my home for an extended period of time, there’s definitely a sense of gratitude for the support from Steph, the kids, family, and community. Again, it’s a pretty huge deal to be able to go away for a week, even if it’s for a good reason. But, what I’m really grateful for is that every day, I get to discover the imago dei through my family. It’s Steph’s hospitality, the children’s joyfulness and fearlessness, it’s a constant source of renewal and hope. These are so easy to miss when I’m stuck in the middle of the craziness when I’m just trying to survive the day-to-day. It’s easy for me to get distracted by the never-ending tasks I have to do at home. Being away, even on this first day, I am reminded of how much I need them precisely because they show me more of who God is.
