Arrow. Day 5. Learned laziness.

East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church > Blog > Arrow. Day 5. Learned laziness.

By: Jer

(It’s been a busy few days and I had to give a 3 minute “evangelistic” sermon yesterday.  Eeks.)

One of the things I say to many of the students I work with is that no one is naturally lazy, but you have learned to be lazy.  Of course, I am definitely an expert at learned laziness.  The problem is somewhere along the way, I began to believe the lie that this was ok and acceptable.  My leadership partner challenged me to consider how this gets in the way of what God desires of us to do.

Last year was Caitlin’s first year at school.  Every morning, I would make use of the Kiss N’ Ride program where I can just drop her off at the front without getting out of the car.  There was this one parent volunteer who was always so welcoming and helpful in the morning.  It really made a huge difference.  I thought maybe when the kids get older, that I could volunteer.  Except, this year, that particular parent volunteer wasn’t there anymore and I have actually seen the principal and vice-principal out there in the mornings.  As I have been considering volunteering this year, I still wanted to wait a year because I have two drop-offs to make and I can barely make it on time.  At least next year, I will have two kids at the same school, so it’s only one drop-off I need to worry about.  But isn’t that exactly how laziness gets in the way?  Is it hard work to get everyone out of the house, not just on time, but early?  Definitely.  Is there any real reason I can’t do it?  Not really, I’m just being lazy.

As I continue to look at my next steps, sometimes, even very simple steps, I know the temptation to be lazy is so strong.  Yet, I know God continues to call me to more and not just settle for good enough.  Even from the first residential, I remember His words to me:  “Don’t just run, trust me and fly.”
