2020 Summer Interns’ Blogpost #1

East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church > Blog > 2020 Summer Interns’ Blogpost #1

By: Guru, Community Engagement Coordinator

My first week with East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church has been quite an eye-opening experience. This is the first time I have ever worked alongside a faith-based organization, and it has challenged me to work outside of my comfort zone. While I was nervous at first, I am starting to become more and more familiar with the work that is done at ETCBC. Viewing some of the work that ETCBC does for youth, families and the community as a whole has been a very eye-opening experience to me and has inspired me to become more involved in the community. This could be through helping out large organizations, giving toiletries and other necessities for those who need them, or just striking up a conversation with a neighbour who might not need any physical items, but does need someone to talk to. I believe that adopting these behaviours and habits will allow me to learn new things about others and others to learn more about me. I hope that taking these new steps will ultimately benefit my growth as a person and as a member of the community.

One thing I really appreciate about everyone I have been able to work with at ETCBC is their open-mindedness and willingness to work with me. Although the pandemic has limited us to online meetings and it can be difficult to directly help communities without being there in person, I believe that I am still able to make a positive impact on the community with ETCBC. I am hoping that I will eventually be able to help out at places such as the Saint Jude food bank, in person, if the pandemic situation allows it. I believe that the experiences I gain this summer will help me in the future when faced with societal and moral dilemmas, and I hope that at the end of the summer I can look back on what I have done and be proud of what I have accomplished this summer.
